DNA, The Digital Code, and The Birth of Information

DNA: A Digital Code Filled With Information…Where did that information come from?

Hello Again Everyone,

I came across an interesting video by Dr. Stephen C. Meyer when I was doing a bit of research for my last post about DNA and Information and thought I’d share it with you.

Dr. Stephen C. Meyer  holds a Ph.D. in the Philosophy of Science from Cambridge University in England.  He was once a geophysicist and college professor and is now director of the Center for Science and Culture at the Discovery Institute in Seattle, Washington.

Several years ago the the first ever peer-reviewed article arguing the case for intelligent design in the creation of life on Earth was published by Proceedings of the Biological Society of Washington. This is a publication staffed by scientists from the Smithsonian Institution, and the article created a national controversy.

Dr. Meyer is the author of that article and he is now the author of a book that makes the same argument: Signature in the Cell: DNA and the Evidence for Intelligent Design.

He’s well spoken and a smart guy.  Hope you enjoy it.

Don’t forget to leave a comment if the mood strikes you…

Next time I plan on discussing some of the inadequacies of Darwinian evolution in explaining life as we see it today.

Hope to see you back!

Roderick MacKenzie

Thanks for the comments Reilly.
Glad you found it interesting!

Error correction? While I knew that our genetic makeup was ultimately fashioned using the sequences in DNA, I didn’t know that this sequencing operated at a level where error correction was facilitated.. although this error correction clearly is not infallible.

What I found even more interesting were the parallels drawn between the DNA sequencing and the digital language of computers. While binary consists of a system of 0s and 1s- two building blocks arranged in various octet combinations- imagine the combinations you could achieve where the system had 4 building blocks!! Imagine the possibilities if we were able to harness the same DNA structure to carry stored data- archiving terabytes of information in the seeds of an apple!

Lastly on Darwin, having read ‘On the Origin of Species’, I did not know that he conceded he could not answer the origin of life per se- ‘presupposing one or two simple life forms’ as Meyer puts it. I think many people today don’t know this subtlety and believe Darwin was largely atheistic in his approach- when in reality he was simply proffering a mechanism by which nature could ‘give the appearance of design without itself being designed in any way’ and ‘supplant the need for design intelligence’ as an ongoing process.

For someone who has struggled with evolution versus creationism, this was an eye-opening article. Thanks Rod!
